Sometimes, the most meaningful journeys begin unexpectedly. For Caliopi D., Software Engineer, it all started with a broken computer and a determination to fix it. That single moment sparked a passion for technology—one that only grew stronger as she explored programming, enrolled in a never-ending pursuit of learning and discovered the thrill of building something from scratch.

what inspired you to pursue a career in tech?
I am a person who loves challenges. I remember my computer broke and I tried to fix it; that is how my journey started and then, step by step, I discovered the programming world.
I was fascinated by the possibility of creating things only by writing code; it seemed like a magical world.
can you share a memorable moment or accomplishment in your career that made you proud?
I recall that when I started the work on the project, I was doing Java, but the project contained C as well. I was searching for something in the project and I stumbled upon some C code and my world changed. A new door opened, I felt like Alice in Wonderland and I immediately fell in love with it, although I remember that during my university courses, I ran away from C.
Java is amazing, but C reminds me of my childhood, those Christmas Eve nights when I was waiting for the presents.
I wanted to do C development, but at that moment when I came on the project, there was no work to do on C, so I had to wait to get the chance to work on low-level stuff. A year and a half later, the blessing finally came and I started working on a few C tickets. To be honest, I haven't found so much joy in anything. I have been chasing that childhood feeling and I was only able to find it here.
So I have 2 medicines that heal every problem: music and programming (Java and C).
in a rapidly evolving field, how do you stay curious and continue learning?
I am a curious person (I have completed multiple courses and I am working on a personal project now) and since I have started the work here, I have never stopped learning. The feeling that I get when I learn/discover something new gives me dopamine and it is addictive. I also see the programming from a nostalgic point of view, as it reminds me of my childhood happiness so I think this helps with my continuous learning.
I was also inspired by the technical lead, who is always learning/always up to date and has tremendous knowledge, so the power of example worked for me. I am very grateful for having the chance to be part of this wonderful team, where all the workmates are amazing.
if you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice as you started your career in tech, what would it be?/ If you could give a piece of advice to young women aspiring to a career in tech, what would it be?
I think I would tell myself: “You will find the joy of your life on this project; just trust the process.”
A piece of advice for women aspiring to a career in tech would be the following: “If you can dream it, you can do it. As with anything in this life, it is a matter of perspective. Programming is challenging, but it can be one of the greatest rewards you can have in life if you allow it to.” :-)
