In technology, to stop learning means to fall behind. Success comes from continuous adaptation, especially in a landscape where AI is rapidly changing the way we work.
Drawing from the Workmonitor 2026 and over two decades of engineering experience, Ovidiu Mitocaru, Delivery Manager at Randstad Digital Romania, talks about how to stay relevant, agile and ready for the next step in a career that never stands still.
ovidiu, you have a solid professional background. how does the concept of "growth" translate at randstad digital romania, beyond changes in job titles?
Ovidiu: Authentic growth is about expanding your capacity to manage complexity. Looking back at my experience – from software development for various embedded and monitoring systems to current responsibilities in delivery management – I see evolution supported by several essential pillars:
- Stepping out of your comfort zone: This is the primary engine of development. A turning point in my career was the transition from writing code for a project to understanding the system and subsequently the systems for which I was developing code or leading the team. This transition was essential because it challenged me to move from simple execution to a deep understanding of the dependencies between hardware and software. It is the stage where you begin to view the system as a whole and understand how every technical decision influences the stability and performance of the entire solution. Expanding this perspective was fundamental not only for my technical development, but also for the moment I started leading teams, helping me guide their efforts to meet the overall architectural requirements.
- Mentorship and knowledge transfer: Evolution is not a solitary path. When you provide guidance to colleagues, the benefit is mutual. The mentor consolidates their foundations and develops leadership and communication skills while the mentee receives valuable shortcuts to best practices, avoiding mistakes that could slow their progress. At Randstad Digital Romania, we encourage this constant exchange through direct support among team members and through volunteer initiatives, such as the opportunity at the beginning of the year to support children's education. Explaining complex concepts to young minds or less experienced colleagues helps you structure your own thinking much better.
- Initiative and ownership: Randstad Digital provides the environment and resources, but the responsibility for progress lies with each of us. Being an "owner" of your own career means being proactive: from proposing innovative solutions that optimize current projects to having an open dialogue with your manager about the direction you want to take. Real evolution begins when you no longer wait for opportunities but create them through performance and communication.
how do you prepare for the changes brought by emerging technologies and what resources do you use?
Ovidiu: Everything starts from curiosity and the need to stay informed and these make learning a constant process. I have focused on the area of Gemini AI and Prompt Engineering, as from the position of Delivery Manager, AI helps us augment the way we work: from streamlining processes by introducing automation or workflows and the rapid analysis of requirements and data, to increasing team productivity by optimizing redundant steps.
Randstad Digital actively supports the development of competencies in this direction: a new learning platform was recently launched and includes new learning paths dedicated to AI, structured by technical roles to help us integrate AI skills into our current activity.
Beyond AI, I continue to invest time in Cybersecurity and Agile Project Management. Cybersecurity is fundamental today; in an interconnected world, you cannot deliver a solution without understanding the risks to data integrity. Even without writing code daily, a solid foundation in cybersecurity allows me to anticipate vulnerabilities and ensure the architecture we deliver to the client is resilient against modern threats.
why is it so important for an engineer to look beyond technical specifications?
Ovidiu: Technology is a means to solve real problems. When we move past the stage of seeing only "our piece of code" and start to understand the client's business—their challenges, their end users' needs and the ultimate goal of the product—our role changes completely.
This openness toward the business brings immense benefit to the project because we can proactively propose more efficient solutions. At the same time, it is the best way to accelerate your own career. Professionals who demonstrate strong business acumen become strategic partners and transition much more naturally into leadership roles, with a clear vision of the impact their work has in the real world.
what would you recommend to a colleague who wants to grow sustainably and what lessons have been useful to you?
Ovidiu: The most important step is to be proactive in seeking progress. Do not wait for formal feedback cycles; ask for feedback whenever you have the opportunity. These external perspectives are necessary "mirrors" that help you identify where you still have work to do.
Regarding resources that have offered me new perspectives, I recommend:
- "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman – This book demonstrates that long-term success does not depend only on technical skills, but on the ability to manage our own emotions and interact effectively with others. In a field where team collaboration is vital, knowing how to listen and how to manage conflicts is just as important as writing clean code.
- "The Intelligence of Matter" by Dumitru Constantin Dulcan – Beyond its philosophical side, this book helps develop "systems thinking." It teaches you to see the interconnections between processes and to understand that any small change in one part of a system can generate effects in the whole. It trains your mind to see beyond the surface, a critical skill for solving complex problems.
many thanks to ovidiu for sharing these valuable perspectives.
Evolution at Randstad Digital Romania remains a partnership: the company offers the resources and context, but the direction and speed of development depend on each person's desire to learn, seek feedback and understand the broader impact of their work.
